The social media giant recently announced plans to release Instagram Reels, a video platform that lets people create interactive 15 secs short clips set to music. The app's functionality is very similar to TikTok, which is the most popular app among smartphone-toting teens and young adults.
The Reels app is home to a ton of video editing features, and it connects to Instagram, allowing users to share the finished product to their Stories. The users can access Reels through a new icon at the bottom of their screen in Instagram and post Reels to Instagram's main feed. If your Instagram account is public, the video can appear on the app's Explore section.
Facebook first launched Reels in Brazil last November and expanded it to France and Germany last month. It launched in India last week — just days after India banned TikTok and more than 50 other Chinese apps citing privacy and security concerns. The launch will be in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Mexico and roughly 50 other countries.
Facebook is utilizing the opportunity to launch its product at the right time when TikTok is facing a lot of scrutiny and ban among its biggest revenue generating markets. This chance can stem rapid increase in popularity of their new app.
In this fast-paced world where trends and preferences constantly change, it is hard to keep the youth generation from using only a platform or technology as they are always on the lookout for something better and newer. Let's see how Instagram Reels will catch their attention!!
